Your Kids and Music History

My daughter is 3 years old. There are a few things I realized a few things about what she will perceive about music and what is my standard of reference. It makes me feel old but also give me a sense of wonderment as time and perceptions march on.

1. Kurt Cobain and Jerry Garcia are dead and always have been for her. The distance from today back to their death is further than the time from their death back to John Lennon’s death.

2. She will never know what the Macarena is. She will probably learn the electric slide but she will never know the easy arm flailing of the Macarena.

3. CDs are to her as records are to me and cassette tapes are her 8 tracks.

4. She will never see a keytar.

5. MTV does not play music videos and never has.
_______________________________________________________________

6. She will not understand why I spent hours trying to download one MP3 off of Napster.
_______________________________________________________________

7. Records stores are not where you purchase music.

8. She will never make a mix tape or know the joy of recording a song off the radio. She will never beg a friend to make her a copy of one of their tapes to your blank tape.
_______________________________________________________________

9. She can store her entire music collection of thousands of songs on one device and have access to even more streaming online. I had only three cassette tapes as a kid and one sucked.

10. Rap is not a fad
